Geriatric Internal Medicine has the highest level of job satisfaction of all sub-specialties, according to a 2002 survey published in Archives of Internal Medicine.

Doctors like you and me are no different from anyone else. We enjoy being in control of our destinies. Unfortunately, in today’s reality this is not the case. Primary care is often a grueling assembly line of high volume quick encounters that leave both you and your patients dissatisfied.

Frankly, I hated office practice. I didn't like being tied down to a schedule, or waiting for late patients who never showed. I got tired of being out of control. It may seem hopeless. “That’s just the way it is”. Sound familiar? We are often too busy working to even think about changing the mess we are in.

If your are not satisfied with your practice, then you and only you must do something to change it. No one will help you, unless you make the first move. You must regain control over your work and your life. For me that change was turning to Geriatric Medicine.

Job Satisfaction, A Typical Day in Geriatric medicine

The satisfaction from practicing Geriatric Medicine doesn't come only from the income. There are higher paying specialties but some of the highest paying also have some of the lowest job satisfaction ratings. Don’t get me wrong, you can make a substantial income in Geriatric Medicine, but contentment doesn't come from money alone.

At some point, and that point is different for everyone, the money doesn’t mean anything. It’s about your personal life, the hours in the day you aren't working. It’s beyond work and money. It may be relationships, family, health or spirituality; things that are ultimately much more important to you as a person. Geriatric Medicine allows you to enjoy these to a much fuller degree.
